Admission Requirements

1.0       ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The Department offers Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy (M.Phil./Ph.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in specific areas of Forestry and Wildlife.

1.1       Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

The following may apply for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Forestry and Wildlife:

a.      Graduates from approved Universities who hold first degree (in Forestry, Wildlife, Agriculture and other related disciplines) classification with Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA) of 1.51 and above on a of 5point scale.

b.      Candidate from approved Polytechnic or Monotechnic who hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Forestry, Wildlife, Agriculture and other related disciplines with a minimum of Lower Credit.

c.       Five (5) credits (C) in O – level, including English, Mathematics and Chemistry plus any other two (2) of the following: Physics or Biology or Agricultural Sciences obtained at not more than two sittings.

1.2 Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife and Ecotourism Management

Candidates seeking admission for the Master of Science degree Programme in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife and Ecotourism Management must have any of the following qualifications from recognized institution(s):

a.     Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Wildlife or other related discipline from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or other recognized Universities with a Minimum of Second-Class Lower Division (FCGPA of 2.50 on a 5-point scale or a minimum of 50% on the percentage scale).

b.     HND with minimum of lower Credit plus PGD at Second class upper division, in addition to satisfying University matriculation requirements.

c.     Five (5) O level credit passes in English, Mathematics and Chemistry plus any other two (2) of the following: Physics or Biology or Agricultural Sciences. Note: Candidate for the M.Sc. options in Forest Economics, Management and Policy or Extension and Environmental Communication, O level credit passes in English and Mathematics plus any one (1) science and two (2) social science related subjects obtained at not more than two sittings maybe accepted.

1.3 Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy (M.Phil./Ph.D.)

Candidates seeking admission for the Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy (M.Phil./Ph.D.) Programme in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife and Ecotourism Management must have any of the following qualifications from recognized institution(s):

a.     Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Wildlife or other related discipline from Nnamdi Azikiwe University or other recognized Universities with a Minimum of Second-Class Lower Division (FCGPA of 2.50 on a 5-point scale or a minimum of 50% on the percentage scale).

b.     HND with minimum of lower Credit plus PGD at Second class upper division, in addition to satisfying University matriculation requirements.

c.     Five (5) O level credit passes in English, Mathematics and Chemistry plus any other two (2) of the following: Physics, Biology and Agricultural Sciences. Note: Candidate for the M.Phil./Ph.D. options in Forest Economics, Management and Policy or Extension and Environmental Communication; O level credit passes in English and Mathematics plus any one (1) science and two (2) social science related subjects obtained at not more than two sittings maybe accepted.

d.     Candidates who obtained a FCGPA of 3.20 to 3.49 (Scale of 5.0) or 4.0 and 4.9 (Scale of 7.0) or 55% on percentage scale in the M.Sc. degree programme from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University or any other institutions recognized by the Senate maybe given admission to M.Phil./Ph.D.

e.     M.Phil. Component: the programme requires a minimum of two semesters and a maximum three semesters to be eligible to sit for conversion examinations from the M.Phil./Ph.D. to Ph.D.

f.      Ph.D Component: the programme shall run for minimum duration of 6 semesters and a maximum of 9 semesters. The candidate shall not be required to undertake research thesis before proceeding to PhD programme. Upon successful completion of M.Phil component, the candidate shall apply for transition into the PhD programme using the appropriate form. Conversion to Ph.D. degree programme will be based on successful completion of a minimum of 18 credits at the 700 and/or 800 levels and oral examination. Only candidates with FCGPA not bellow 3.5 shall be allowed to proceed to the PhD programme.

g.     Candidates for admission to M.Phil./Ph.D. in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife Ecotourism Management programme in the Department of Forestry and Wildlife without forestry and/or wildlife background will be required to offer extra prescribed remedial courses at undergraduate and postgraduate diploma levels.

h.     The principal examination is based on course work and the thesis, which must show evidence of the candidate’s ability to draw significant conclusion from his research.

1.4       Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife and Ecotourism Management

Candidates seeking admission for Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Forestry and Ecosystem Science, or Wildlife and Ecotourism Management must have the following qualifications from recognized institution(s): must be graduates of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University or other Universities/Institutions recognized by the Senate and should possess M.Sc. or M.Phil. degree in Forestry, Wildlife, and other related disciplines.

a.     should possess M.Sc. or M.Phil. degree in Forestry, Wildlife and other related disciplines with a minimum of FCGPA of 3.5 (scale of 5.0) or FCGPA of 5.0 (scale of 7.0)

b.     Bachelor’s degree in Forestry and/or Wildlife or Related Fields.

c.     Five (5) O level credit passes in English, Mathematics and Chemistry plus any other two (2) of the following: Physics, Biology and Agricultural Sciences. Note: Candidate for the M.Phil./Ph.D or Ph.D. options in Forest Economics, Management and Policy or Extension and Environmental Communication, O level credit passes in English and Mathematics plus any one (1) science and two (2) social science related subjects obtained at not more than two sittings maybe accepted.
